Torchlight Infinite currency guide
Flame Dust, Flame Sand, Flame Elementium, embers, fossils, beacons and Primocryst: what each one does, where it comes from and which ones to sell.
Torchlight Infinite does not have one currency. It has a ladder of crafting materials, a family of embers and fossils that steer crafting, a pile of commodities other players buy, and a premium currency on top. Once you know which is which, most of the economy stops being confusing.
The short version
- Flame Dust, Flame Sand and Flame Elementium are the three crafting materials, for gear with more and more affixes. FE is also what players trade in.
- Embers decide which kind of affix a craft adds. Fossils change the odds of getting more or better affixes.
- Beacons open Netherrealm stages. Three identical beacons trade up for one of a higher rank.
- Primocryst is the premium currency. It buys convenience such as bag space and revival tokens.
The three crafting materials
All crafting runs on one of three materials, and which one you need depends on how many affixes the gear has.
| Material | Crafts gear with | How rare |
|---|---|---|
| Flame Dust | 0 to 1 affix | Common. Sell unwanted gear to the Trader for Flame Residue, which turns into Flame Dust. |
| Flame Sand | 2 to 4 affixes | Uncommon |
| Flame Elementium | 5 to 6 affixes | Very rare, orange quality |
Flame Elementium has a second job that makes it far more important than the other two: it is the currency players price everything in. Items on the Auction House are listed in FE, so farming currency in Torchlight Infinite mostly means farming FE, directly or by selling things for it. The Flame Elementium farming guide covers where it comes from.
Embers and fossils
Embers are the steering wheel of crafting. There are more than ten kinds, and the one you use decides the direction of the affix a craft adds, so you can push a piece of gear towards the stats your build wants. They come in tiers, Precious, Matchless and Ultimate, for adding affixes to gear of different rarity. Because every crafter needs them, embers are some of the most reliable things you can sell. Restless and Ominous embers are the common ones most players sell first.
Fossils are rarer and change the odds rather than the direction.
- Acute Fossils raise the chance that a craft adds a new affix.
- Spiral Fossils raise the chance of higher tier affixes.
- Sacred Fossils upgrade a T1 affix to T0.
Beacons and other commodities
Beacons open Netherrealm stages. Each stage needs a specific beacon, and beacons come in tiers that match the Timemarks: tier 1 for Timemarks 1 and 2, tier 2 for 3 and 4, and so on. You can trade three identical beacons for one of the next rank, or two identical ones for a blind box. The Netherrealm endgame guide covers how they fit into progression.
The rest of the Commodity tab is worth knowing too.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Water of Forgetting | Gives one talent reset point, for when you respec after the free reset window ends. |
| Netherrealm Resonance | Refreshes Netherrealm stages. Mostly a late game item. |
| Energy Cores | Reset a piece of gear's energy. Mid to late game. |
| Fate Cards | Exchange for embers, crafting materials or gear, including legendaries. |
Each season also brings its own currencies. SS13 Afterlight added things like Desire Crystals from the Cube and Sandalwood Incense from Sandlord, which sold for hundreds of FE early in the season. Seasonal items are often the most profitable thing to sell in the first weeks and lose value quickly after that.
Primocryst, the premium currency
Primocryst is bought with real money, and some also comes from the Merits system and the season guide. It pays for convenience: more bag pages, Revival Tokens, Sands of Time, Insight Crystals, and pets and outfits through Fantasy Crystals. The currency the rest of the economy runs on is still Flame Elementium.
What is worth selling
If you are short on FE, go through your Commodity tab before you farm another map. The things that sell most reliably are embers, beacons for popular planes, compasses and memories, energy cores and seasonal currencies while they are new. Gear sells too, but check prices first: two legendaries with the same name can be worth wildly different amounts depending on their rolls.
The Auction House unlocks at level 60 and takes a tax on each sale. Flame Elementium Vouchers let you claim some of that tax back.
Picking it all up
Most of these items drop on the floor in small amounts, and over a few hundred maps that is where the income comes from. MUSA's Torchlight Infinite bot picks up Flame Elementium, Flame Sand, embers, beacons, memories, good gear and the other collectibles as it goes, even in the middle of a fight, and opens the chests it passes. You still decide what to sell.
Common questions
What is the main currency in Torchlight Infinite?
Flame Elementium. It is the top crafting material and the currency players use to price and trade items on the Auction House.
What is the difference between Flame Sand and Flame Elementium?
Both are crafting materials. Flame Sand crafts gear with 2 to 4 affixes. Flame Elementium crafts gear with 5 to 6 and is much rarer, which is why it doubles as the trading currency.
What are embers used for?
Embers steer crafting. The type of ember decides which kind of affix gets added, so you can craft towards the stats your build needs.
