Torchlight Infinite classes: every hero and trait

The full roster in one place: 12 heroes, 28 traits, what each trait does and what "Selena 2" or "Thea 3" actually means.

Torchlight Infinite has 12 heroes, and they work as its classes. Each hero has up to three traits, which are subclasses with their own mechanics, for 28 traits in total as of SS14 Tartarus. The trait decides how a character plays far more than the hero does, so this list covers every one.

The short version

  • Heroes are the classes. Traits are the subclasses, and players number them in the order the game lists them: Erika 1 is Wind Stalker, Youga 2 is Spacetime Elapse.
  • SS14 Tartarus adds Youga's third trait, The Ultimate One.
  • For a first character, Selena 2, Erika 1, Youga 2 and Thea 3 are the safest picks going into SS14.

How heroes and traits work

When you make a character you pick a hero. Each hero has a title, such as Cateye Erika or Oracle Thea, and up to three traits. Sage, the most recent hero, has one so far. The trait is the mechanic your build is built around, and builds on the same hero can have almost nothing in common: Wind Stalker Erika gets stronger the more she moves, Lightning Shadow Erika numbs enemies around her, and Vendetta's Sting Erika fights up close with fast melee hits.

That is why the community uses numbers. "Erika 1" means Erika with her first trait, which is clearer than the trait name when you are skimming a tier list. The numbers below follow the order the Torchlight Infinite database uses, which is the order players use too.

Not every trait is free from the start. Some unlock by playing, some can be bought, and new ones often come with the paid season pass before you can earn them. Our page on whether Torchlight Infinite is pay to win explains how that works.

Heroes by playstyle

If you know how you like to play but not which hero fits, this is a rough guide.

  • Melee: Rehan, who fights through Rage, and Erika 3, the assassin style trait.
  • Projectiles: Carino. His three traits are three different ways to handle ammo and range.
  • Spells: Gemma for cold and fire, Youga for time magic, Thea for Blessings and Erosion.
  • Minions: Moto with his Synthetic Troops and Iris with her Spirit Magi. Moto 2 sends the troops in as bombs, while Moto 1 keeps them fighting.
  • Damage over time: Youga 2 and Thea 3, the usual choices for killing bosses on a budget.
  • Something different: Bing's bombs and machines, and Sage's alchemy elixirs.

Which class to pick

For a first character in SS14 Tartarus, pick something that progresses on little gear. At the end of SS13 that meant Selena 2, Erika 1, Youga 2 and Thea 3, and until Tartarus has its own data they are the safest bets. Selena 2 is the safest if you only make one character, because it ranks well both as a starter and in the endgame.

Our Torchlight Infinite tier list ranks every trait as a starter and in the endgame. If you mainly want to farm currency, the best heroes for farming narrows it down further, and the SS14 Tartarus guide covers what else is new this season.

Classes and botting

You can run a farming bot on any hero. MUSA reads your equipped skills and key bindings from the game and fights with whatever you have set up, so you can keep the hero you enjoy. Builds that clear a map in a few casts without careful positioning get the most out of it, which is another point for Selena 2 and Carino 2. The Torchlight Infinite bot page has the details. Automation breaks the game's rules, and our bot safety guide explains the risk.
